With most of the existing coins landing on the lower end of the Mint State scale, the 1872 CC Liberty Seated Half Dollar is both a rare and valuable find. An MS62 graded coin of this type was sold for its record price back in 2008.
This half dollar holds a special place in the coin collection realm. It marked the inaugural year of coin production for the Carson City Mint, hence its desirability. With limited production across all denominations, an MS62 graded 1870 CC Liberty Seated Half Dollar fetched $172,500 at a 2011 auction.
Regarded as THE key date, the 1921 S Walking Liberty half dollar is a rare jewel due to its extremely low survival estimates. Conceived by Adolph Weinmann, it is a favorite among collectors. Its highest recorded price was $188,000 for an MS66 graded coin in 2016.
The 1878-S Liberty Seated half dollar's value is steep due to its rare nature stemming from a low mintage. An estimated sixty of these coins exist today. A pristine MS64 graded coin from this batch made its way to the auction block in 2014, fetching an impressive $199,750.
Being the rarest of all Walking Liberty half dollars, the 1919-D coin is quite a catch for collectors. Difficulty in finding this coin in higher grades only adds to its desirability. A well-preserved MS66 graded coin was sold for $270,250 in 2004.
Known as the most famous of all Capped Bust half dollars, the 1817/4 coin is an error coin where the 1817 date was struck over the 1814 date. With only ten known examples in existence, an AU50 graded coin was auctioned for $356,500 in 2009.
With two versions of this coin in existence (one with 15 stars, another with 16), the 1796 Draped Bust half dollar holds a special place in U.S. coinage. The addition of Tennessee as the 16th state in 1796 prompted the change to 16 stars. An MS63 graded 15-star version of this coin sold for $373,750 in 2008.
Being one of the incredibly rare coins with less than 12 known to exist, the 1838 O Capped Bust half dollar was the first coin minted at the New Orleans Mint. An SP64 graded coin fetched a stunning $763,750 at an auction in 2014.
The 16-star version of the 1796 Draped Bust half dollar is the more valuable one, thanks to the addition of Tennessee as the 16th state that year. With an estimated 40 surviving coins today, an MS66 graded coin was sold for $822,500 in 2015.
The last but not least, the 1797 Draped Bust half dollar marks the final year of the Draped Bust design on the half dollar. This coin is a scarce find with only an estimated 200 surviving coins from an initial mintage of 2,984. A MS66 graded coin made history in 2015, selling for a record-breaking $1,527,500.
